FAQs on Hair loss
Hair grows from little pockets called follicles. Each follicle has a root at the bottom that is made up of proteins cells. Blood enters the scalp through the roots’ follicles to create more cells, leading to hair growth. There are about 100,000 follicles on a person’s scalp and an average of 50-100 hairs a day fall off!
Hair loss can occur at the scalp or in other parts of the body and it’s normal! Hair loss becomes a problem when either the cycle of hair growth and shedding is obstructed or when the hair follicle is destroyed. The common factors for these hair loss causes include hereditary conditions with aging, hormonal changes due to pregnancy and thyroid problems, medical conditions, certain medical drugs such as those used to treat cancer, extreme stress and excessive pulling and tightness due to certain hairstyles.
Many men tend to start losing their hair while still in their 20s! Although factors can differ, hair loss in men is usually the result of a genetic trait which causes what’s it referred to male-pattern hair loss or androgenic alopecia. The hair loss pattern in men is usually that of a letter ‘M’ because the hairline starts receding mainly from the sides and top of the scalp. The follicles just stop growing hair!
Although baldness is commonly associated with men, women do also suffer from hair loss problems or a reduction in hair volume. Female-pattern hair loss, also known as androgenic alopecia, usually presents itself as hair thinning at the top part of the scalp rather than with patches of baldness. In women, the hairline doesn’t have a tendency to recede. However, the hair might feel less thick than normal. It is very common that female-pattern baldness starts occurring after menopause. So, it’s a combination of genetics, hormonal changes and ageing factors.
